Non-Invasive Ventilation

Non-invasive ventilation

All physicians at every grade should be able to assess a patient with respiratory distress and implement the basic management principals. One of the core aspects to acute respiratory distress, management is the use of non-invasive ventilation. This station provides you with a working airway model, ventilator and mask. An experienced Respiratory physician will provide a breakdown of how this apparatus works and how to alter settings in response to changing clinical variables. This is a rare opportunity for physicians to become competent at using non-invasive ventilation in the acute setting.

At the end of this station you will:
  1. Be aware of the indication for NIV
  2. Be able to apply the NIV machine and mask to a patient
  3. Be aware of common problems with set up and how these can be addressed
  4. Be able to change the settings in response to clinical need
  5. Be aware of possible complications, their presentation and management
